About this project

This site features a queryable database of 3D models from AAA games.

Currently, there are only about 3,000 models from three games. Many more models from many more games are planned to be added.

I try to focus on 3D that isn't common across titles. That is, I avoid MetaHuman/CC content, hair cards, megascans, generic foliage, SpeedTree, etc.
This is to ensure that the database is rich with unique and interesting assets.

Tags for the images are generated using Google's Gemini Pro Vision model, enabling querying via tags.

This is very much a WIP and I am still testing things, so please email me with any suggestions: free3dxyz@protonmail.com

BLEND as a transmission format

A .blend file isn't necessarily a blender save. The .blend files from this project are library .blend files,

They are minimalistic and only contain the following data blocks:

They do not contain:

The .blend format also has built-in file compression, similar to .zip.
It is therefore perfect for use as a transmission format and why I chose to use it.

The reason why .glTF isn't ideal is because the specification requires channels to be packed in a certain way.
Simply setting it up with Blender's Principled BSDF shader is less destructive.

Animations

Games will often have thousands of humanoid animations tied to the single skeleton that all humans use.
These are easy to extract, but don't really make sense in a tag-based image database.

If you require human animations from a specific game, or human animations in general, I recommend getting UModel.
The highly convenient animation previewing feature makes it much more efficient for browsing the animations.
All that's required are the game files and the very small application that is available below.

If you notice that a particular animation results in the skeletal mesh collapsing into a pile, it's likely because it is an additive animation.
These animations usually consist of a frame or two, and are meant to compliment the other animations; e.g. a character flinching while an aiming animation is playing.

File Hosting

I am currently using mega.nz to host the files.

I was previously using megaup.net, however their 7-day inactive file erasure was proving to be too much to keep up with.

The trade-off is that mega.nz has a 5 GB bandwidth limit, but doesn't have ads unlike megaup.net.
Mega.nz is also perhaps more strict with takedowns.

If you have a suggestion for a better, similarly reliable solution, please email me at free3dxyz@protonmail.com
